Marte Stuns in Debut with Giants

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Last night, 2024/25 Fireflies right-handed pitcher Yunior Marte made his Major League debut for the San Francisco Giants. The Dominican Republic native spun 4.2 innings around one run in a Giants 7-2 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks in game two of a doubleheader. Marte is the 36th former Fireflies player to make his Major League debut and the fourth to do it in the 2026 season. He joins Peyton Gray, Eric Cerantola and David Sandlin who have also made their MLB debuts in 2026.

The Royals signed Marte as an International Free Agent in 2022 and he pitched in parts of two seasons with the Fireflies. He came to the team near the end of the 2024 campaign and started a pair of games before getting a more complete look in 2025. The righty was 3-5 with a 2.74 ERA in 82 innings across 19 starts with the Fireflies in 2025. He struck out 79 opponents while holding hitters to a .205 average. Marte was named the Carolina League Pitcher of the Month in May of 2025 with the Fireflies. Across the month, Marte led the Carolina League with a 0.71 ERA across 25.1 innings of work. He held opponents to a .171 average as he earned three wins and two quality starts to win the award.

At the trade deadline in 2025, the Kansas City Royals traded Marte for Major League outfielder Mike Yastrzemski. Marte ended the season with five appearances with the Single-A San Jose Giants. This year, the 23-year-old started in High-A Eugene before a promotion to Double-A Richmond June 2. While with the Flying Squirrels, Marte was 2-4 with a 3.92 ERA in 13 starts over 64.1 innings pitched. He had 74 strikeouts before his call-up to the Majors.
