A historic gem in the heart of Lynchburg, Virginia, City Stadium offers a timeless baseball experience. As the fifth-oldest Minor League ballpark still in use, the stadium has been a cornerstone of the community since it first opened its doors in 1940. Originally known as City Stadium, the venue has a rich history, hosting exhibition games with legendary teams like the New York Yankees and Brooklyn Dodgers, as well as a long line of Minor League Baseball affiliates.
The stadium has also been a launching pad for some of baseballโs most recognizable talent. The legendary 1983 Lynchburg Mets roster featured future stars Dwight โDocโ Gooden and Lenny Dykstra, while other notable alumni to pass through the ballpark include Darryl Strawberry, Josรฉ Bautista, Rick Aguilera, Bronson Arroyo, Kevin Mitchell, and Hall of Famer Red Schoendienst. From the YankeesโDodgers exhibition that inaugurated the field to decades of player development that followed, City Stadium has built a legacy of unforgettable moments and remarkable athletes. Today, it continues to honor its rich history while serving as the energetic home of the Hill City Howlers, Single-A Affiliate of the Cleveland Guardians.
