Comets Endure 12-Inning Battle Over Round Rock

Game Summary: Trailing entering the ninth inning, the Oklahoma City Comets fought through 12 innings and came out on top, 5-2, over the Round Rock Express Friday night at Dell Diamond. Round Rock (33-28/64-72) took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning and maintained that advantage leading into the ninth inning. The Comets (37-24/78-57) evened the score when James Tibbs III hit a solo home run leading off the ninth. The Express stranded two runners on base in the bottom of the ninth to send the game to extra innings. Eliezer Alfonzo delivered a pinch-hit RBI single in the 10th inning to put the Comets ahead, 2-1. Later in the inning, Alfonzo was thrown out at home plate trying to score on a single by Alek Thomas, keeping OKC’s lead at one run. Round Rock tied the game in the bottom of the 10th on a sacrifice fly. After both teams went down in order in the 11th inning, the Comets scored three runs in the 12th inning with a Ryan Fitzgerald RBI double and a two-run blast from Alfonzo to take a 5-2 lead. The Express were retired in order in the bottom of the inning to end the game.

Of Note:

-The Comets have won seven straight games and eight of their last nine games. OKC matched its second-longest winning streak of the season, and for the first time since 2013, the team has recorded three separate winning streaks of at least seven games in the same season.

-With a loss by first-place Sugar Land, Oklahoma City is now tied with the Space Cowboys at 37-24 atop the PCL second-half standings with 14 games remaining…At 78-57 overall, the Comets are a season-best 21 games above .500.

-Among the seven straight wins, six have been last at-bat wins, including Friday. In addition to six of the last seven games, seven of the last 10 games and eight of the last 12 games have been decided in a team’s final at-bat.

-Oklahoma City played in a 12-inning game for the first time since June 3, 2018 vs. Omaha. The Comets went to extras for the second time in three games, as well as in five of the last 12 games and six of the last 14 games. OKC has played in multiple extra-inning games during each of the last three series and has won three straight games in extra innings.

-The Comets have started a series with a 4-0 lead for the second time this season, last doing so Aug. 4-7 at Salt Lake.

-The Comets won their eighth straight game at Dell Diamond and have taken nine of 10 games at the venue this season.

-Eliezer Alfonzo entered as a pinch-hitter in the 10th inning and finished 2-for-2 with a homer and three RBI. He hit his second homer of the year and first since April 25 vs. Tacoma. The catcher also matched a season-high in RBI for the second time, last doing so Aug. 8 at Salt Lake.

-James Tibbs III tied the game in the ninth inning with his team-leading 28th home run this season. It’s OKC’s second game-tying home run when trailing in their final at-bat this year, along Tyler Fitzgerald May 8 vs. Salt Lake...Tibbs also collected his 100th run scored of the year.

-Ryan Fitzgerald finished 1-for-5 with a RBI double to continue an 11-game hitting streak. He’s 16-for-42 (.381) with eight extra-base hits and 10 RBI during the streak.
