Comets Take 2-0 Series Lead with 11th Straight Win

Game Summary: Behind 6.0 innings of relief from Jackson Ferris, the Oklahoma City Comets earned an 11th straight victory with an 8-6 win over the Sugar Land Space Cowboys Wednesday afternoon at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. Sugar Land (39-26/71-68) took a fast lead on a three-run blast from Collin Price in the first inning. Oklahoma City (41-24/82-57) tied the game in the bottom of the first with a bases-loaded walk drawn by Noah Miller followed by a two-run single from Austin Gauthier. The Space Cowboys went deep again in the second inning on a solo shot from Collin Price before the Comets jumped in front, 6-4, in the bottom half of the frame on a bases-clearing double from Ryan Fitzgerald. Sugar Land made it a one-run game in the third inning with a RBI groundout off the bat of Zach Dezenzo. The Comets added to their lead with a two-run sixth inning, scoring on a sacrifice fly from Fitzgerald followed by a wild pitch to bring in James Tibbs III. Sugar Land got back on the board in the eighth inning as Raynel Delgado grounded into a RBI fielder’s choice for its only run against Ferris who quickly closed the game with a five-pitch ninth to earn the save.

Of Note:

-The Comets extended their winning streak to a season-best 11 games. The stretch is now Oklahoma City’s second-longest winning streak in the Bricktown era, only behind a 12-game streak July 26-Aug. 6, 2013. The current 11-game streak is the longest in Triple-A this season and is the fifth winning streak of at least 11 games across full-season Minors this season.

-Oklahoma City extended its PCL second half lead and is now 2.0 games ahead of second-place Sugar Land with 10 games remaining in the regular season…The Comets are now a season-best 25 games above .500.

-Jackson Ferris finished the game for Oklahoma City in relief, tossing 6.0 innings with one run, two hits, two walks and seven strikeouts for his first professional save. He retired a stretch of 11 straight batters from the fourth through seventh innings. Ferris matched an Oklahoma City high for strikeouts by a reliever this season, matching his own total Aug. 8 at Salt Lake. Over his last five games, Ferris has allowed four runs in 28.1 innings with 35 strikeouts.

-Ryan Fitzgerald drove in four RBI as part of a 1-for-4 game with a double. The outing marked Fitzgerald’s third game with at least four RBI this season and first since a five-RBI contest April 12 vs. Round Rock. Fitzgerald has collected a hit in 14 of his last 15 games, going 20-for-59 (.339) with 10 extra-base hits and 17 RBI.

-Austin Gauthier finished 2-for-3 with two RBI. The infielder collected multiple hits for the first time since Aug. 22 at Sugar Land and drove in multiple runs for the first time since July 19 at Tacoma.

-Ryan Ward played in his 503rd career game in an Oklahoma City uniform, surpassing Kelly Dransfeldt (1999-2002) for the most in the Bricktown era. He reached base four times with two hits and two walks.

-Los Angeles Dodgers right-handed pitcher Edwin Díaz continued a Major League Rehab Assignment making his second appearance with Oklahoma City. He tossed two-thirds of an inning, allowing one run, two walks and one strikeout while throwing 22 pitches (10 strikes). The three-time All-Star and three-time Reliever of the Year made his first-ever appearance at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark as he is recovering from neck inflammation.

-Oklahoma City’s eight runs scored marked its most since a nine-run game Aug. 13 vs. Albuquerque. The Comets have scored 15 runs during the first two games of the series, recording their most runs in a two-game span since matching the effort Aug. 12-13 vs. Albuquerque. Oklahoma City has also collected double-digit hits in the last two games, doing so for the first time since Aug. 16-18.

-Comets pitchers struck out 14 batters, marking their most since Sept. 1 at Round Rock. Oklahoma City has recorded 10 games this season with 14 or more strikeouts and leads the league with 1,285 K’s this season.
