Omaha Falls to Iowa 7-6

Waters homers and reaches 4 times, but Storm Chasers can’t hold on to 4-run lead

DES MOINES, IOWA – The Omaha Storm Chasers (25-29/58-70) fell to the Iowa Cubs (26-30/56-72) on Saturday 7-6. Drew Waters hit a home run while reaching base 4 times, but the Storm Chasers couldn’t hold on for a win.

Alejo Lopez opened the game with a bang, hitting his first Storm Chasers home run on the 2nd pitch of the game to put Omaha in front 1-0.

Iowa responded with a leadoff home run of their own in the bottom of the 1st inning off Storm Chasers starter Vince Velasquez, but Colton Becker hit an RBI single and Elih Marrero laced an RBI double to give Omaha a 3-1 edge in the top of the 2nd.

Velasquez then worked a perfect bottom of the 2nd inning and a scoreless bottom of the 3rd inning to keep the score 3-1.

The Storm Chasers added to their advantage with back-to-back home runs from Drew Waters and Luca Tresh to lead off the top of the 4th inning, bringing the score to 5-1.

The Cubs clawed back with 1 run off Velasquez in the bottom of the 4th inning and 4 more off him in the bottom of the 5th inning to put Iowa in front 6-5. The Cubs’ run in the 4th inning crossed on a sacrifice fly, with a solo home run, RBI single and 2-run home run in the 5th inning to snatch the lead.

After Iowa took the lead in the bottom of the 5th inning, Mason Black took over for Velasquez with the bases empty and two outs in the frame, and he worked around a pair of singles to keep the game 6-5.

Black followed with a perfect bottom of the 6th inning and Brandon Drury tied the game 6-6 with an RBI single in the top of the 7th inning.

Omaha called back on Black for the bottom of the 7th inning, and he fired another 1-2-3 frame, sitting down 7 batters in a row between the 5th and 7th innings.

Lucas Erceg (1-1) came into the game for Black to open the bottom of the 8th inning, but an Iowa single and double drove in a run for the Cubs to take a 7-6 lead.

In the top of the 9th inning, Omaha put runners on the corners, but couldn’t drive either of them in, finishing the narrow 7-6 loss.

The Cubs will host the Storm Chasers for the series finale on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is set for 1:08 P.M. CT and Lucas Braun is scheduled to start for Omaha.
