Red Wings Stifle Bisons for Third-Straight Win

The Rochester Red Wings (34-21, 79-49) used a four-run fourth inning to top the Buffalo Bisons (28-26, 63-66), 5-3, on Friday for their third-straight win against their I-90 rival. The win, along with the help of the Columbus Clippers beating the Indianapolis Indians, put the Red Wings in a tie for first place in the International League second-half standings. After three scoreless innings to start the ballgame, the Bisons broke the ice. RF Yohendrick Piñango hit a one-out blooper into center, starting the Buffalo rally. SS Jay Harry sent him the length of the diamond on an RBI double, making it 1-0 Buffalo. 1B Lenyn Sosa kept the pressure on, greeting the new Red Wings pitcher with a hard-hit base knock, scoring Harry from second to give Buffalo a two-run advantage.

Although Buffalo threw the first pair of punches of the game, it was the Wings who slapped back in the home half of the fourth. CF Phillip Glasser was dealt a free pass to lead off the inning, before moving up 90 feet on a DH Yohandy Morales base hit, setting up first and second with one out for prominent 3B Cayden Wallace, who promptly smashed a 78 MPH sweeper into the left field corner for a double, cutting the Bisons' lead to one. RF Leandro Pineda's six-pitch walk in the following at-bat knocked the Bison starter out of the game, allowing double machine Liover Pegeuro to hit his 23rd two-bagger of the year into the left-center gap, clearing the bases, making it 4-2 Red Wings after four innings of play.

The back-and-forth action continued into the fifth inning as Buffalo 3B Josh Smith earned a free pass before LF Sean Keys chased him home on a triple that hit just under the yellow line on the wall in right-center field, making it a 4-3 game in favor of Rochester.

For the second time in as many innings, Glasser reached base as the leadoff man in the fifth, this time on a single up the middle, which allowed Morales to teleport him to third on a base knock of his own, making it first and third with one out for Wallace, who hit a ground ball deep into the hole at shortstop, allowing Glasser to skip across the plate, giving Rochester its two-run lead back.

RHP Yovanny Cruz came on to close it out in the ninth, retiring the Bison on 14 pitches, giving the Red Wings the 5-3 win, while also picking up his first save with Rochester and fifth overall between Rochester and Scranton W/B.

RHP Issac Lyon made his Triple-A debut for the Red Wings Friday night. The former Grand Canyon Antelope tossed three scoreless frames and finished with a final line of twos: two runs on two hits and two walks, with two strikeouts. The bulk man, RHP Chandler Champlain, came in to finish up the fourth before firing four more innings, allowing just one run, two hits, three walks, while striking out six. Yovanny Cruz was the third and final Red Wings reliever of the night. The flamethrowing righty fired a scoreless frame, allowing just one hit and striking out two.

The Rochester Red Wings player of the game is 1B Liover Pegeuro, the former Philadelphia Phillie farmhand, logged his first multi-hit game as a Red Wing with a base-clearing three RBI double that would eventually prove to be the game-winning hit. The Dominican Republic native is finding his groove at the plate, registering a hit in each of his last three games.

Both squads will be back at it Saturday night, as the Wings look to make it four in a row against their I-90 rivals. LHP Jared Simpson will take the ball for Rochester. First pitch is slated for 6:45 p.m.
