Bisons Snap Red Wings Three-Game Winning Streak Saturday Night

Seeking a fourth straight win, the Rochester Red Wings (34-22, 79-50) faced the Buffalo Bisons (29-26, 64-66) in game five of their six-game homestand Saturday night and fell by a final score of 6-1 after an early four-run burst by Buffalo in the opening frame. Rochester’s lone spark came from C Maxwell Romero Jr., who broke up the shutout with a solo shot in the fourth.

The Bisons got off to a hot start in the opening inning after two consecutive singles were sent to left field by DH Josh Smith and 3B Lenny Sosa. Shortly after, 1B Sean Keys laid down a sacrifice bunt, allowing both runners to move up a base. Buffalo took advantage of being in a scoring position with a three-run homer to left-center field by LF Davis Schneider.

Following a groundout, the Bisons extended their early lead in the first after SS Nick Goodwin sent a line drive to left field. CF Ismael Munguia logged a single to left field of his own, sending Goodwin to second. After a mound visit, C William Simoneit shot an RBI single to right field, allowing Goodwin to reach home plate, making it 4-0 Bisons in the first.

Rochester found their response in the third after C Maxwell Romero Jr. smashed the first pitch of the half-inning to right field for a solo homer, making it 4-1 Bisons entering the fourth.

After three quiet innings, Buffalo extended their lead in the seventh with a sequence of events that began with a leadoff double from Davis Schneider. Shortly after, a groundout would lead Schneider to third, following an RBI single from CF Ismael Munguia sent to center field, allowing Schneider to score. The Red Wings avoided further damage and got out of the half-inning down 5-1.

The Bisons put the exclamation point on their productive evening in the ninth after Davis Schneider drew a walk, followed by RF Yohendrick Piñango smashing an RBI double to center field. Rochester entered the bottom of the ninth down five runs, and the score would ultimately hold at a 6-1 final in game five.

Southpaw Jared Simpson made his seventh start of the season this evening for Rochester. The Iowa native allowed four runs on six hits, walked one batter, and struck out two in 1.1 innings of work. RHP Andry Lara replaced Simpson in the second. In 2.2 innings, he did not allow a run, allowed one hit, and struck out three batters without allowing a walk. RHP Ben Grable made his second appearance for Rochester in the fifth. Grable did not allow a run, allowed two hits, walked one batter, and struck out two in 1.1 innings. RHP Jack Sinclair replaced Grable in the sixth. In 1.2 innings, he allowed one run on two hits, walked one batter, and struck out three. RHP Jake Bird came in to pitch in the eighth. Bird pitched for 1.0 inning and walked one batter and struck out another. RHP Connor Van Scoyoc took over in the ninth and allowed one run off of one hit and walked a batter.

The Rochester Red Wings Player of the Game is RHP Andry Lara on Saturday night. The right-hander out of Coro, Venezuela, has now turned in 5.1 scoreless innings across his previous two outings and has allowed two earned runs or fewer in each of his last six appearances dating back to August 11, boasting a 2.45 ERA over that stretch.

The Red Wings will conclude their six-game series against the Bisons on Sunday with an earlier first pitch slated for 1:05 p.m. In search of a series win, RHP Zak Kent (5-0, 4.40) is expected to take the mound, while Buffalo's starter has yet to be announced.
