With both teams tied for the top spot in the Pacific Coast League entering play Tuesday, Zach Cole homered for his third consecutive game, but the Sugar Land Space Cowboys (39-25, 71-67) dropped the first game of their six-game series against the Oklahoma City Comets (40-24, 81-57) 7-4 on Tuesday night at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.

RHP Ryan Weiss allowed just four baserunners through the first three innings while keeping Oklahoma City scoreless and striking out seven batters. In the bottom of the fourth inning, a single and a walk put two runners on base before Chris Newell followed with a two-RBI single to open the scoring for the Comets, giving Oklahoma City an early 2-0 lead.

After a fifth-inning solo home run extended the Comets’ advantage to 3-0, RHP Michael Knorr entered in relief in the sixth inning and tossed a scoreless frame while striking out one batter to keep Oklahoma City off the board.

In the top of the seventh inning, the Space Cowboys broke through against the Comets. Cole hit a single before Pascanel Ferreras followed with his 22nd double of the season to put two runners in scoring position. Joey Loperfido then hit a ground ball to shortstop and reached on a fielder’s choice, allowing Cole to score and plate the first run of the inning. With runners on the corners, Collin Price lifted a fly ball to left field for a sacrifice fly, bringing the Space Cowboys within one at 3-2.

Oklahoma City scored four two-out runs in the bottom half of the inning to extend their lead to 7-2 before the Sugar Land offense struck again in the eighth. Jake Meyers led off the inning with a single before Cole smashed a home run to right field, bringing the Space Cowboys within three.

RHP Jackson Nezuh tossed a perfect bottom of the eighth inning, inducing a flyout and two groundouts to keep Sugar Land within striking distance heading to the final inning. Price led off the top of the ninth with a single before two groundouts and a popout ended the game, giving Oklahoma City a one-game advantage in the standings.

NOTABLE:

Zach Cole went 2-for-5 with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored on Tuesday night. Cole has now homered in three consecutive games and has hit a home run in four of his last five games. Over his last five games, Cole is 8-for-22 with a double, four home runs, eight RBI, two walks and five runs scored.
RHP Ryan Weiss tossed 3.1 innings, allowing five hits and two runs while walking two and striking out seven. His seven strikeouts are a season high and are his most in a game since May 18, 2021, when he struck out eight for Amarillo against Midland.
RHP Michael Knorr tossed a scoreless sixth inning on Tuesday night. Knorr has not allowed a run in 16 of his last 19 appearances. Over his last 19 outings, Knorr has thrown 21.1 innings, allowing nine hits and three runs, two earned, while walking 10 and striking out 25.
Collin Price lifted a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning, extending his RBI streak to four consecutive games.
Jake Meyers went 2-for-4 with a walk and a run scored on Tuesday. His single extended his hitting streak to six games, tying Zach Cole for the longest active hitting streak on Sugar Land’s roster.
Pascanel Ferreras went 3-for-4 with a double, a walk and a run scored in Tuesday’s series opener, extending his on-base streak to six games. Ferreras’ double was his 22nd of the season, which ranks third in the PCL since his debut on June 2. His multi-hit performance was his 26th of the season and his fourth multi-hit game in his last six games. Ferreras has also scored a run in five straight games.

Sugar Land will look to even their series against Oklahoma City on Wednesday afternoon. RHP Jason Alexander will take the mound for the Space Cowboys opposite LHP Jackson Ferris for the Comets.
