Syracuse Mets Recap: Six Syracuse Pitchers Combine to No-Hit Lehigh Valley in 8-0 Win

Allentown, PA – Six Syracuse pitchers combined to throw the franchise’s first nine-inning no-hitter since 1971 as the Mets shut out the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, 8-0, on Sunday afternoon at Coca-Cola Park. The no-hitter was the 18th in Syracuse franchise history, while the Mets finished the six-game series with four wins.

Syracuse jumped in front immediately. In the top of the first inning, Nick Morabito led off with a single, stole second and scored when Mark Vientos launched a two-run home run to right field for a 2-0 lead.

The Mets added another run in the third. Morabito reached on catcher interference before Vientos singled, and Ronny Mauricio doubled home Morabito to extend the lead to 3-0.

Syracuse broke the game open with four runs in the seventh. Morabito walked before Vientos blasted his second two-run homer of the afternoon to make it 5-0. Mauricio followed with a single and MJ Melendez launched another two-run home run, pushing the advantage to 7-0.

Vientos completed his huge afternoon in the ninth, hitting his third home run of the game to provide the final run in the 8-0 victory. Vientos finished 4-for-5 with three home runs, five RBI and three runs scored.

On the mound, Syracuse used six arms to complete the no-hit bid. Kevin Herget started with 1.2 hitless innings, striking out one without issuing a walk. Saul Garcia followed with 1.1 hitless innings, allowing one walk and striking out one. Tobias Myers (3-1) earned the win with three perfect innings, striking out one. Chayce McDermott worked a hitless seventh, allowing one walk; Joe Jacques retired all three batters he faced in a perfect eighth; and Zach Franklin worked a perfect ninth to finish the no-hitter. The six combined to allow only two walks while facing 28 batters.

Syracuse returns home Tuesday to begin a six-game series against the Rochester Red Wings at 6:35 p.m.
