DAYTON, OH — The West Michigan Whitecaps saw their postseason hopes come to an end minutes before suffering a 9-5 loss to the Dayton Dragons Saturday night in front of 8,616 fans at Day Air Ballpark.
The Great Lakes Loons officially eliminated West Michigan from postseason contention with a 5-0 victory over the Lake County Captains, clinching the Midwest League Eastern Division second-half playoff spot before the Whitecaps completed their game in Dayton. The result ended West Michigan’s pursuit of the postseason with one game remaining in the regular season.
Left-handed pitcher Win Scott made the start for West Michigan, but Dayton took advantage of several defensive miscues to build an advantage the ‘Caps couldn't overcome. West Michigan battled back offensively with five runs, but the Dragons pulled away to secure their third consecutive victory and a 3-2 lead in the six-game series.
Infielder Cristian Santana provided a piece of franchise history for the Whitecaps, blasting his 16th home run of the season. With Santana joining Bryce Rainer (18) and Jackson Strong (16), West Michigan now has three players with at least 16 home runs in the same season for the first time in franchise history.
Dayton first baseman John Michael Faile made history of his own, blasting the 31st home run of his Dragons career to become the franchise’s all-time home run leader. Faile entered the series tied with Chris Williamson, who hit 30 homers for Dayton from 2000-02, before moving into sole possession of the record Saturday night.
Defense proved costly for the Whitecaps for a second straight night. West Michigan committed three errors Saturday after making three in Friday’s 8-1 loss, marking the first time this season the ‘Caps have committed at least three errors in back-to-back games. Their six errors over the last two contests are also their most over any two-game span this season – a surprising late-season stretch for a Whitecaps club that owns the best fielding percentage in the Midwest League.
The Whitecaps scored five runs after being held to just one hit and one run Friday night but couldn't overcome Dayton’s advantage. West Michigan has now been outscored 26-10 during its three-game losing streak after outscoring the Dragons 28-17 over the first two games of the series.
The loss drops the Whitecaps to 35-30 in the second half and 59-70 overall, while Dayton improves to 28-35 in the second half and 67-62 overall. West Michigan remained in the postseason hunt until the penultimate day of the regular season before Great Lakes ultimately secured the Eastern Division second-half playoff spot.
