Tortugas shut out in series opener, fall 11-0 to Palm Beach

JUPITER, Fla. — The Daytona Tortugas were held to four hits and shut out for the sixth time this season Tuesday night, falling 11-0 to the Palm Beach Cardinals in the opener of a six-game series at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium.

Palm Beach broke open a scoreless game with four runs in the third inning and never looked back, finishing with 15 hits and five home runs as Daytona dropped its first game of September.

The Rundown

Daytona had opportunities to strike first against Palm Beach starter Branneli Franco but could not capitalize.

Mulivai Levu was hit by a pitch with one out in the first before Arnaldo Lantigua doubled to right, putting runners at second and third. Franco responded by striking out Adolfo Sanchez and retiring Rafhlmil Torres on a flyout to escape the threat.

The Tortugas threatened again in the second. Drew Davies led off with a single and Henry Hunter added a two-out single that moved Anielson Buten to third, but Steele Hall flew out to end the inning.

Lantigua singled and Sanchez was hit by a pitch in the third, giving Daytona two more runners aboard before Palm Beach again escaped without allowing a run.

After Jake Brink retired the first seven Cardinals he faced, Palm Beach erupted in the bottom of the third.

Gabe Camacho opened the rally with a double before Jayden Lobliner launched a two-run home run to right field. Two batters later, Trevor Condon added a solo homer to make it 3-0. Miguel Hernández followed with a single and eventually scored on Ryan Mitchell’s RBI single, giving Palm Beach a four-run inning.

Dee Kennedy extended the lead with a solo home run to left in the fourth.

Palm Beach put the game away in the fifth. Hernández doubled and Alexander Frias reached on an error before Kennedy walked to load the bases. Owen Henne then drove the first pitch he saw over the wall in right-center field for a grand slam, stretching the Cardinals’ lead to 9-0.

Brink departed later in the inning after 4.1 frames. The right-hander allowed 10 hits and nine runs, eight earned, while walking two and striking out four.

Logan Tanner entered and kept Palm Beach off the board through the remainder of the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. Tanner scattered three hits and one walk across 2.2 scoreless frames, extending his scoreless streak to 5.2 consecutive innings.

Meanwhile, the Daytona offense was held without a hit after Lantigua’s third-inning single. Dallis Moran retired all nine batters he faced across three perfect relief innings for Palm Beach.

The Cardinals added their final two runs in the eighth against Jesus Colina. Hernández led off the inning with a solo home run before Frias tripled and scored on a Mitchell sacrifice fly.

Daytona put one runner aboard in each of the final two innings but could not break through. Hall walked in the eighth before Davies drew a free pass in the ninth, but Palm Beach completed the 11-0 shutout.
