Summary

Nolan Schubart’s game one home run and game two walk off double powered the Akron RubberDucks to a doubleheader sweep over the Richmond Flying Squirrels on Friday night at 7 17 Credit Union Park. Akron took game one 3-1 while winning game two 4-3 in eight innings.

Turning Point

Akron set the tone for the doubleheader with a loud first inning in game one. Ryan Cesarini opened the inning with a single before advancing to second two batters later on a Jace LaViolette walk. Schubart followed with a three-run blast left center field to make it 3-0 Akron.

In game two, the RubberDucks looked to answer Richmond’s run in the top of eighth. Cesarini walked to put runners on first and second before wild pitch advanced both into scoring position. After Richmond got a ground out and strikeout, Schubart walked off the Flying Squirrels with a two-run double to left to give Akron the 4-3 win.

Mound Presence

Franklin Gómez was excellent in game one. The left-hander allowed just three hits over five scoreless innings while striking out one. Sean Matson followed with two scoreless innings of relief and three strikeouts to secure the win.

Caden Favors ran into some early trouble in game two allowing runs in each of the first two innings. But the left-hander settled in after the second inning to allow just one baserunner the rest of his night. In total, Favors tossed five innings allowing two runs while striking out four. Michael Kennedy tossed two scoreless innings while striking out four. Cam Walty allowed the extra-inning placed runner to score limited Richmond to just the one run.

Duck Tales

After not scoring after the three-run first inning in game one, Akron got back in the run column in the first inning of game two. LaViolette launched a solo home run to bullpens to tie the game 1-1. Richmond took a 2-1 lead in the second, but the RubberDucks tied it in the fifth. Alex Mooney opened the inning with a triple before scoring on a sac-fly by Maick Collado to even the game 2-2.

Notebook

Schubart’s three-run home run in game one put him over 100 RBI on the season between Akron and Lake County making him the first member of the Guardians organization to drive in 100 in a season since Will Brennan in 2022…Schubart is the first member of the Guardians organization to hit 30+ homers and driver in 100+ in a season since Matthew Whitney in 2007…Akron swept a doubleheader for the first time this season…Game Time: 1:35/2:19…Attendance: 7,769 (Sellout).
