Five-Run Ninth Inning Gives Indians Sunday Night Win

Indy’s late-game rally keeps Indians 1.0 game back of first place ahead of final homestand this week

TOLEDO, Ohio – The Indianapolis Indians scored five runs in the top of the ninth inning on Sunday night to rally back and defeat the Toledo Mud Hens, 8-5. With the win, Indianapolis enters its final homestand 1.0 game back of Rochester and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre for the scond half lead in the International League standings.

Indians (36-27, 67-71) infielder Duce Gourson got the rally started in the ninth with a RBI triple to score Mitch Jebb and make it 5-4 with Toledo still in front. Infielder Enmanuel Valdez hit a bloop single to left field to score Gourson to extend the rally and tie the game at 5-5 for a moment. After a Jack Brannigan walk, outfielder Tyler Callihan singled to bring home Valdez to put Indy in front, 6-5, and advance Brannigan to third. A wild pitch from Toledo (32-31, 66-71) pitcher Tanner Rainey scored Brannigan to put Indy up, 7-5, and ended with a Robert Hassell III groundout to score Callihan to put a cap on the five-run rally for Indy.

After Nick Dombkowski started and went 6.0 innings with six strikeouts and only surrendered two hits, Noah Davis and Cy Nielson (W, 1-0) came on for one inning each and Beau Burrows (S, 14) closed the door for the win.

The Indians jumped out to a 3-0 lead, but Toledo responded with one run in the bottom of the fourth and a 4-run seventh inning to take the lead before the ninth-inning rally from Indy.

Jebb led the Indy bats going 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored, while Gourson went 3-for-5 with two RBI. Valdez and Callihan each also recorded multi-hit games.

For Toledo, Jack Flaherty started his first rehab outing of the season going 1.1 innings with two strikeouts. Austin Gomber went 3.2 innings with four strikeouts, but Rainey (L, 5-4) gave up five earned runs and four hits in the ninth for the loss.

The Indianapolis Indians return to Victory Field fox six games beginning Tuesday for the last regular-season homestand against the Omaha Storm Chasers.
