Indians Snap Skid Behind Four-Run Fifth Inning at Toledo

TOLEDO, Ohio – Indianapolis Indians infielder Nick Cimillo hit his fourth home run in four days as Indy used a four-run fifth inning to beat the Toledo Mud Hens, 6-0, on Friday night. Indians infielder Duce Gourson homered in the top of the sixth inning and starting pitcher Connor Wietgrefe (W, 5-5) went 6.0 innings with five strikeouts and only allowed five hits to pick up his third win this season against Toledo.
Friday night was Indy’s 10th shutout win this season to stay 1.0 game back of Rochester for the second half lead in the International League standings.
After Cimillo’s home run in the fifth inning, Indians (35-26, 66-70) outfielder Mitch Jebb scored on a wild pitch from Toledo (31-30, 65-70) starter Dylan File (L, 6-10). Jebb finished the night 1-for-4 with two runs scored.
Designated hitter Enmanuel Valdez singled later in the inning to bring in Ronny Simon to end the scoring for the inning. Simon’s second double of the night scored Jebb in the top of the seventh inning to put Indy up 6-0. Simon ended the night 2-for-5.
Derek Diamond (S, 1) came on in the seventh inning for Indy and went 3.0 innings with two strikeouts and did not allow a hit against Toledo to earn his first save of the season.
The six-game series between Indianapolis and Toledo continues Saturday night at 7:05 PM ET. RHP Thomas Harrington (2-6, 5.70) is scheduled to start for the Indians and RHP Sawyer Gipson-Long (2-6, 5.57) will take the mound for Toledo.
